New Unit: Enter the land of Narnia!

Why? One of the most common ways to gain fluency in a language is by enjoying a longer book written at an easy reading level. This book has very adult themes, but is written at a younger level. It affords wonderful discussion while being easily accessible.

As we read, we will build our vocabulary and ensure reading comprehension while practicing quality writing, active conversation, and correct grammar skills.

First, get the book in subtext.

  • Then return to your digital copy of the personal narrative and make all the needed corrections.
  • Print a new, beautifully corrected copy of your Personal Narrative and staple it to the old copy. Turn it in for 15 pts+ I will go back and change your original grade to 30/30. That makes this assignment worth 45 points in which you automatically get 100%!

Here is an example of my own I Am poem.

I Am

I am adventure sensitive.

I wonder what silly thing my daughter will say next.
I hear country music playing in my head.
I see a burly man...but he can't even crawl yet.
I want a double scoop of butter pecan iced cream and a space heater.
I am adventure sensitive.

I pretend to be angry when I actually want to laugh.
I feel warmth and peace.
I touch the alarm clock again.
I worry my babies will grow up too fast.
I cry because babies and old friends, like ice cream, they just don't keep.
I am adventure sensitive.

I understand how precious each moment is.
I say time is short but you are forever.
I dream we will understand our own power to care.
I try to show what I can't say.
I hope they know how much I love them.
I am adventure sensitive.

Unpanned Absence

Hi students!

This post is here just in case I unexpectedly get sick or am somehow prevented from coming to school.
Please help the substitute to find the hard copies of our magazine. It is hidden behind the big picture of me and my husband on the shelf by my desk.

I would like you to explore a major current issue here in the U.S. Please follow these steps and help the substitute with whatever she or he asks you to do.

  1. First, in Notability, answer this journal question: What does China do to prevent large amounts of immigration into the country? If it is possible, how would a person from another country take up residence in China?
  2. Vocab: You should have already copied my vocabulary set on Quizlet. My set is called "Upfront Immigration." Please continue your Notability document by writing a sentence using each of the 20 words.
  3. Watch Intro video here.
  4. Read Article.
  5. In Notability, make a set of reasons in two bullet point lists. List one - give all the reasons in FAVOR of immigration (How is immigration a good thing for the U.S. and for people?). List two - give all the reasons why the U.S. should stop or seriously limit immigration (How is immigration a bad thing for the U.S. or for people?). Refer back to the article to help you find the information.
  6. Take the quiz and record your score out of 13 at the bottom of your Notability document. Click here.
  7. Check out this NYT article specifically about Mexican immigration. Click here.
  8. Write a summary of the NYT article including the information as well as how you felt as you viewed the images. Then write one paragraph explaining you opinion of what should be allowed by law for those who desire to immigrate to the U.S. Explain why you would choose to structure the law this way.
  9. When I return, we will submit this document to Focus for a grade.
